Presentation Christian Meirich: Capacity of a railway network

On behalf of the German Railway Authority (Eisenbahnbundesamt) the suitability of a parameter “Capacity of railway infrastructure” in the target and performance agreement (LuFV) between the federal government and Deutsche Bahn AG has been analyzed.

Today the capacity of railway lines can be calculated as well as the capacity of railway nodes by means of analytic algorithms. The scope of the work was to investigate if it is possible to define one single parameter “Capacity” for the whole railway network. Therefore methods to aggregate the single values for lines and nodes have been analyzed.

Currently there is no generally accepted method to allocate the key figures of lines and nodes. As a result a single parameter to describe a railway network’s capacity is not given nowadays.
